Preachers and Supposition

Many times I have heard preachers say that:
75% of people who are in psychiatric hospitals would not need to be there if their knew that their sin was forgiven.
One of my pet hates is preachers that say things without qualifying them. I have gone to preachers and asked them where they have got their quotes from. I have often been dissapointed that they are unable to tell me the source of their information. I suspect that there is no other profession on earth that could get away with asserting supposition without evidence!
However, today I was listening to Ajith Fernando (one of my favourite preachers) talking about Jonah chapter 3. He said that the above quote comes from an American psychologist Carl Meninger. I have always wondered if it was true, now all I need to find is a reference to the quote and I’ll feel at liberty to use it!
Start of the week rituals

I was doing my usual start of the week rituals, which involve checking my e.mail and scanning my RSS feeds for anything interesting (my rss feeds are listed in my blogroll) when I came accross a quiz. There are loads of these silly things, I usually ignore them because on the whole they are time wasters. I did this one because I knew it would appeal to Alice.

The best and worst bits

The worst bits… …
- Endless dust, especially when we pulled the ceilings down.
- In the middle feeling it would never end.
- Water pouring through the entrance hall ceiling because I had not trapped the overflow form the washing machine in the toilet!
The best bits
- Being able to use the kitchen again.
- Nicola and Nigel coming to collect the caravan.
- Painting the playroom.
- Putting the skirting boards and architraves on.
Photo memories…

Today I have been putting the finishing touches to the downstairs. There is still quite alot to do, the builders are coming back to fit the doors and we have all the woodwork to paint. But just putting skirting board on feels like a finishing touch. It is about 18 months since we discovered that after 3 days of rain the kitchen flooded. It was boxing day and the house was full of visitors!
We had to completely gut the lower floor… …
Fit a new back door and replace the patio with a window… …
7 eight ton skips later, we were cooking and eating in a caravan throughout last summer. The builders took up residence and then I started rewiring and fitting the kitchen…

18 Kitchen cupboards, 43 downlighters, 1 new oven, loads of sweat and not a few tearts later…
All that is left to do is to fit a small amount of skirting, fit two window sills, paint the woodwork, touch up the rest of the paint… … oh yes, I’ve not started the downstairs loo yet!

Andrew Jones has a great post re-reading the account of the ten lepers who Jesus clenses. It’s an good example of how to re-read scripture in language that will mean something to some people.

Jonah

It is time to start a new series in the evening services at church. From this Sunday we are going to read and think about Jonah for a few weeks. Jonah is one of the most well known stories from the Bible, it is one of the archetypal stories that are told to children and reprinted in childrens bibles.
I was inspired by the Juniors contribution to the BB display and some comments that carol made on one of my posts.

Gill is teaching Isaac how to play the recorder. He has learned 3 notes so far, but he can never remember which line on the stave corresponds with which note. While I was looking for flash cards to teach him I found this helpful tutor:
